10 tips to maintain oral health

Everyone aims at having a great smile which is why it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene. Having unhygienic oral health can result in many dental issues such as infection, gum disease, heart disease, loss of bone, stroke, etc. This is why it is important to have regular dental appointments to prevent these issues as well as maintain oral hygiene.

Here are some of the tips to maintain oral health-

  1. Proper Brushing:

The basic step to keep your teeth clean is by brushing properly. While brushing the teeth, put the bristle at a 45-degree angle along the gum edge. Both the teeth surface as well as gum edge should be in touch with the brush. Brush the external side of your teeth back-and-forth as well as up-and-down ensuring that you are gentle. Coming to the inside of the teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45-degree and again brush your teeth in the same motion.

  1. Limit your intake of caffeine:

Caffeine products such as coffee, soda, and alcohol are enriched with phosphorous which is an important mineral that keeps the mouth healthy. However, over consumption of phosphorus can reduce the calcium level of the body. This consequently can cause dental problems like gum disease and tooth decay. A beverage that contains additives like food dye can result in making your teeth look discolored and dull. Hence it is recommended to choose beverages that will help in strengthening the teeth and gum.

  1. Flossing:

It is a chore that most people feel too lazy to do. However, they just don’t understand its importance. Flossing can effectively help you to remove the food particles that brushing fails to remove. Flossing reaches deep between the teeth where bristles of the brush cannot outstretch. It is recommended to floss your teeth at least once a day.

  1. Calcium is your friend:

You need a significant amount of calcium to keep your teeth healthy. It is important not just for your teeth, but it also works well for your bones as well. It is recommended to drink milk, eat yogurt, cheese, broccoli, and dairy products. You can also consume calcium supplements, however, make sure that you are taking it according to your age or as per prescribed by the doctor. Vitamin D and Calcium are important for healthy maintenance of the teeth and gum. Other than that Vitamin B, copper, zinc, iron, potassium, and iodine are also important elements for maintaining oral health.

  1. Cleanse your tongue:

It is not just about cleaning your teeth and gum daily. It is important that you clean your tongue as well. It is recommended to use a tongue cleaner to remove the bacteria from the surface of the tongue especially on the hard surface of the tongue. If you don’t clean your tongue regularly, it can result in bad breath and also impact your oral health. So, make sure that you regularly clean your tongue whenever you brush your teeth.
